Cinnabar
This ore of mercury yielded a bright red (and poisonous) base for paint that was broadly used in the Americas. The Maya rubbed it into ritual objects and liberally coated the bodies of deceased kings and nobles with it. The significance of this is not known: it could have had a symbolic association with blood or it could have been an attempt to disguise the effects of putrefaction during royal funerals.
