A curious legend of the pelican's alledged self-sacrifice links this bird to Christ. Medieval naturalists believed that the pelican fed her young by tearing open her breast and allowing them to feast on her blood directly from her heart. (Observers probably saw her feeding her young the fish she regurgitated into her ample bill pouch.) She is thus a feminine representation of the sacrifice of Christ upon the cross.
