Water nymphs who owe their unlife to drowning accidents in the Volga and its tributaries. Rusalka haunt the place of their death. They leave the river, sometimes, to sport and cavort in secluded glens. Men who sneak up on them during their play die from the sound of their laughter. Rusalka, however, bear humans no animosity. They help fishermen and other hard-working river folk. Dwellers by the water throw them wreathes as tokens of gratitude.
