Demons thought by some to be the souls of those who did not receive a proper burial. Dybbukim possess the bodies of the living, perhaps as torture, perhaps because of anguish. Rabbis are said to have the power to exorcise them; the dybbuk is either redeemed or sent to hell, depending on the incantation used.
