The guardian of cattle, trade, and the dead. He became, with the arrival of Christianity, the Armenian St. Blaise (or Vlas or Blasus). Blaise hid in a cave to avoid persecution for his faith and cared for sick and wounded animals. He has been invoked for protection against diseases of the throat, especially choking, and is the patron saint of wool-gatherers.
