The first apostle received the "keys of the kingdom of heaven" from Christ (Matthew 16:19). The Catholic Church has interpreted this as the basis for the universal authority of the Roman See. Popular lore places St. Peter at the gates of Heaven where he checks the names of arrivals in the Book of Life.
