"She who opens up the way", a goddess of creation and war. Her name, like that of Yahweh, consists entirely of consonants (NT). When the brothers Seth and Osiris fought, the gods asked Neith to arbitrate. Neith ruled that, in compensation for his wife's adultery, Seth should receive the Canaanite goddesses Anat and Astarte as his wives. The mother goddess was also active in the cult of the dead. She welcomed the dead to the underworld, plying them with food and drink as they arrived.
