This ostrich-plumed daughter of the sun god ensures cosmic harmony through the application of truth and justice. She weighs each soul's heart (the seat of conscience) against a feather. If the heart weighs more than the feather (because it is heavy with guilt), Maat stands aside so that the monster Ammit can annihilate the sinner on the spot. She is married, appropriately, to Thoth, the god of scribes and wisdom. See Michael.
