The Maasai say that their ancestor Le-Eyo botched the magic that could resurrect the dead. Instead of reciting the formula correctly, he accidentally switched the words for "man" and "moon". Thereafter, the incantation would not work, even if said correctly. So it became that men died forever and the Moon renewed itself each month.
