The giant goddess of death, the progeny of the first human being (Hine-hau-one) and Tane, the forest god and creator of the human race. Hine-mnui-te-po ("Great Mistress of the Dark") was originally called Hine-titama ("Dawn Maiden"). She unknowingly married her father and then fled in horror to the underworld when she found out who he was. She cursed Tane's descendants (humanity) with death in retribution for his incest.
