| Hathor
Egyptian
Bovine goddess of fertility, beauty, love, marriage, and childbirth who, like her Indian counterpart Kali, could also be an agent of vengeance. Once the sun god Re sent her to punish humanity, who he thought was plotting to overthrow him. Hathor did her job with murderous efficiency, so possessed by sanguinary enthusiasm that she threatened to slaughter all of humankind. Re, who had wanted only the destruction of the impious, was forced to resort to a bizarre strategem to stop the genocide: he flooded the fields with red beer. Hastor mistook this for blood and greedily lapped it up. The stupor that followed her intoxication cooled her battle lust. So was humanity saved.
