A patron saint of widows. Thwarted in her early resolve to become a nun, Frances and her sister nevertheless cared for the poor of Rome and founded a society of devout, lay women living under the Rule of St. Benedict called the Oblates of Mary. Upon her husband's death, she became the order's mother superior.
