Tens of thousands of angels obey the commands of the "angel of the silence of the stillness of Death" who rules over Hell. Twelve thousand more attendants mete out punishment to damned souls. Dumah appears to be of ancient origin: one of the gatekeepers who strips Ishtar on her descent into the underworld bears the name.
