Azrael
Hebrew/Islam
Muslim lore holds that Azrael is a perpetually busy clerk who is forever writing and erasing names from his account book: the names he inscribes are born and those he rubs out, die. He separates the soul from the body at death by holding one of the fruits from the Tree of Life to the nostrils of the dying. Some Jewish mystics say he embodies evil. Muslims speak of his glory, a sight made all the more stupendous to mortals by his 70,000 feet, 4000 wings, and an eye and a tongue for every person now living.
Gabriel or Raphael may be other names for this angel of death.
