The son of the mother goddess Cybele who became a eunuch by his own hand when the temptations of an amorous she-monster became too much for him to resist. He was put to death for his incestuous attraction to Cybele. She revived him and thereafter commemorated his sacrifice at a sanguinary spring festival during which rams were sacrificed; members were baptized with their blood; initiates removed their manhood; and eunuch priests cut themselves in his honor. Initiates who became either eunuchs or married men believed that they entered a state of bliss that would last even after the grave. Attis appeared in a shroud.
