The great sacred bull who, like most other Nilotic deities, encompasses the two mains obsessions of Egyptian life: fertility and death. Apis died. He avoided being rendered into steaks by the Macedonian King Ptolemais I, who grafted the god onto Osiris. The bio-engineered product is known as the Serapis.
