The Mayan dread of death is personified in the walking skeleton/bloated corpse called Ah Puch. He is said, even today, to haunt the houses of the sick, looking for victims. The most unfortunate of his prey jet dragged to Mitnal, the lowest and most horrific of the nine underworlds where he and his demon cohort hold sway. Modern Mayans in the Yucatan and Guatemala call him Yum Cimil.
