The paradise of Mi-Lo, "the Laughing Buddha". Before the appearance of the Pure Land Sect in the seventh century CE, Mi-lo's cult with its promise of rebirth in his heaven was popular in China. After a six century long sabbatical, he returned in the form of the fat and jolly monk whose devotees now looked to him for prosperity and a happy family life.
