| The Pure Land
Buddhist
The Western Paradise, an idea that represents a break with the earlier Buddhist doctrine of nirvana. Those who sincerely say the name of the Buddha of "infinite light" obtains for her or himself a lotus throne here, without the sticky necessity of having to work through several lives before they achieve the perfection necessary for entry into Nirvana. Belief in The Pure Land is especially popular among Chinese and Japanese Buddhists. [See Heaven, Tian]
