The journey of the dead began with burial beneath or behind their homes (if they were poor) or cremation (if they were rich). Their relatives filled their mouths with corn (maize) and put jade beads in their hands to use as money. The most corrupt of these descended to the ninth and last underworld, Mitnal, the realm of Ah Puch and his demon horde.
