| Jigoku
Buddhist (Japan)
The place of torment for the wicked and the unjust: Hell for the Japanese Buddhist. Jigoku is divided into sixteen regions -- eight of fire and eight of ice -- where sinners are thrown after a review of their lives by the demonic court of Emma-Ho and his sister. The idea of a post-mortem dungeon is a late addition to Buddhist belief. The Buddha himself held that people simply reincarnated as a lower order of life, delaying their passage into Nirvana.
