Alcatraz's industries could not run twenty four hours a day like commercial shops on the outside. For fewer than eight hours a day, they lay idle as prisoners ate their meals, went back to their cells for the counts, enjoyed free time in their cells during the evening, and slept. When empty, the industries hallway looked like the inside of an Egyptian temple, dedicated to the higher purpose of rehabilitating America's toughest convicts.
